A brass is 100 cubic feet, or 2.832 cubic metres — the traditional trade unit across western India. River sand is normally billed by brass, crushed aggregate by tonne, and both by cubic metre in formal contracts.
Bulk densities differ: river sand about 1550 kg/m³, M-sand 1750, 20 mm coarse aggregate 1500 and 10 mm aggregate 1600. Always confirm which figure the supplier used before converting a tonnage quote.
Damp sand bulks by up to 30% in volume, so a volumetric purchase during monsoon can deliver significantly less dry material than the invoice suggests. Weigh-bridge receipts avoid the dispute.
Treat every output as an indicative pre-tender estimate. Site conditions, wastage allowances, specification changes and local market rates all move the final figure, so validate against your drawings and approved rate analysis before procurement.
